Virtuous or Voluptuous?

We just got a book by Richard Baxter called, “The Christian Directory”, which is actually a huge book that biblically addresses almost anything you could imagine. As we were leafing through it with Mr. Ben, we noticed a heading about the dangers of a voluptuous woman. I never realized that voluptuous had a meaning with a moral – actually immoral- connotation and was not just a description of the physical attributes of a woman. Today, in many contexts, to be physically voluptuous is something that women work for and something that men admire. Teenage girls hope to be voluptuous and even Barbie is considered voluptuous. (I’m getting tired of typing it already!) Realizing that Richard Baxter was not addressing a body type (way back in the 1600’s), but a type of person, I dug in a little more. Al mentioned that he recently saw a chart that contrasts Voluptuous vs. Virtuous on a blog. So I googled the internets and found a contrast chart of the Proverbs 31 woman and the voluptuous woman described throughout the first 9 chapters of Proverbs.

Here are some of the links – including where Al saw the post originally…
Contrast Chart
Recover the Gospel – Virtuous
Recover the Gospel – Voluptuous

The following is the chart in the only form I could paste here. I’m not really blogpost savvy…

Each pair begins with the voluptuous and ends with the virtuous…

SHE IS A HOME MAKER (Proverbs 31).

SHE IS EASY TO FIND (Proverbs 7:10-12).
SHE IS HARD TO FIND (a rare gem) (Proverbs 31:10).

SHE IS CHEAP (Proverbs 30:20)
SHE IS PRECIOUS (Proverbs 31:10)

SHE HAS OUTER BEAUTY Surface attraction (Proverbs 6:25).
SHE HAS INNER BEAUTY Heart attraction (Proverbs 31:30; 1 Peter 3:4).

SHE WORKS WITH HER MOUTH(lively lips but no life) (Proverbs 21:9,19; 25:24 etc.).
SHE WORKS WITH HER HANDS(a lovely life producing loving words) (Proverbs 31, many verses).

SHE IS RELIGIOUS (Proverbs 7:14).
SHE IS RIGHT WITH GOD (Proverbs 31:30).

SHE IS OUTSIDE THE HOME (Proverbs 7:11-12).
SHE ABIDES IN THE HOME (Proverbs 31:27).

SHE DOES HER HUSBAND NOTHING BUT HARM (Proverbs 2:17).
SHE DOES HER HUSBAND GOOD (Proverbs 31:12).

SHE IS ON THE LOOSE AT NIGHT (Proverbs 7:9,18).
SHE IS RESTING AT NIGHT SO SHE CAN AWAKE EARLY (Proverbs 31:15).

SHE KILLS HER VICTIMS (Proverbs 7:23).
SHE BLESSES HER FAMILY (Proverbs 31:28).

SHE LIVES BY LUST (Proverbs7:10).
SHE LIVES BY LOVE (Proverbs 31:20).

This list alone is convicting – but I’m stirred on to look at each contrast individually and will post as I go along. Feel free to leave your comments to help move me in the right direction.
