Merciful Waiting

One of my favorite passages is Lamentations 3:22-26…

“The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases;
his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.
“The LORD is my portion,” says my soul,
“therefore I will hope in him.”
The LORD is good to those who wait for him,
to the soul who seeks him.
It is good that one should wait quietly
for the salvation of the LORD.”
His steadfast love and mercies are unending and new every morning. I love passages that talk about the mercies of God, as I am a recipient of His great mercy! But there is mercy in waiting!
As we are waiting for Ezra’s paperwork to clear immigration so he can come home and especially just waiting for Ezra himself, I was blessed by the writings of John Flavel from The Mystery of Providence. It was a personal reminder of God’s perfect timing.

“The delay of your mercies is really for your advantage. You read, ‘and therefore will the Lord wait that he may be gracious’ (Is. 30:18) What is that? Why, it is nothing else but the time of His preparation of mercies for you, and your hearts for mercy, that so you may have it with the greatest advantage of comfort. The foolish child would pluck the apple while it is green; but when it is ripe, it drops of its own accord and is more pleasant and wholesome.”
