A Farewell Sermon by Jonathan Edwards

More to consider from Jonathan Edwards on the relationship of the minister, the flock, and God…

The meeting at the last day, of ministers and the people that have been under their care, will not be attended by anyone with a careless, heedless heart.

With such a heart are their meetings often attended in this world by many persons, having little regard to him whom they pretend unitedly to adore in the solemn duties of his public worship, taking little heed to their own thoughts or frame of their minds, not attending to the business they are engaged in, or considering the end for which they are come together. But at that great day there will not be one careless heart: no sleeping, no wandering of mind from the great concern of the meeting, no inattentiveness to the business of the day, no regardlessness of the presence they are in or of those great things which they shall hear from Christ, or that they formerly heard from him, and of him, by their ministers in their state of trial, or which they shall now hear their ministers declaring concerning them before their Judge.

Al was gone for a week…

Al went to Northern Frontier to lead the week-long fishing trip for teen guys. They camp on a lake for a few days then hike to the Hudson river and camp there for a few more days. This year he had 5 campers, a 17 year-old co-counselor and his friend, Ray.

Al had the chance to really get to know the guys and taught them about the attributes of God, including holiness, sovereignty, justice, grace & mercy, and love! He started and ended with Daniel 11:32 – “but the people who know their God shall stand firm and take action.” and encouraged them to know God – reminding them that we are made to know God (John 17:3 & Jeremiah 9:23-24) – and exhorting them to stand firm and take action based on the knowledge of God.

He also taught them a little something about fishing…Check out that bass!!!!

PS – One of the campers is our 17 year old nephew who has been on ‘Uncle Al’s’ fishing trip for four years now.
